3 Unique & Easy Science Word Wall Ideas

So you need a science word wall? We’ve got you covered with 3 time-saving options.

Let’s rewind to my first year of teaching when my most-prized piece of technology was an overhead projector.

That first science word wall was literally hand-written vocabulary on different color index cards. You know what? It was fine! We used our word wall regularly to play games, when notebooking, and during review.

We have so many more options now, though, so let’s take advantage of these new opportunities!

Here are 3 unique and EASY science word wall options for 3rd grade, 4th grade, and 5th grade!

1. Science Word Wall Picture Dictionary

Explicitly teaching science content vocabulary just got simpler!

Rather than just printed words and definitions, Picture Dictionaries can be used for mini-lessons as your students create their own vocabulary cards.

Bonus: Each card has a unique image or video about the term and a “Did you know?” learning extension.

Instead of looking for examples, images, and definitions on your own, the work is done for you.

2. Science Anchor Charts

Anchor charts are simple and effective. My science classes made anchor charts with important vocabulary. Post it during your unit or keep it up all year long.

The most important part of anchor charts? Creating them together! Have an idea ready and construct it on chart paper with your class.

If you need some ideas, you can enlarge the pages from Science Graphic Organizers or draw them larger.

3. Student-made Science Hexagons

Another vocabulary resource we used was vocabulary hexagons. These are student-made vocabulary cards that are displayed on a science word wall bulletin board.
