The First Week of Science (4th + 5th Grade)

The first week of school is always a complicated time when it comes to planning. How do you balance activities that are fun, meaningful, but also rooted in science? Science Penguin has some ideas to help you with that! Let’s take a look at three FREE resources that can make your first week a success.

Watch the video for details!

#1 Interest Inventory

This simple resource can give you valuable info about your students! It can be completed digitally as a Google Form, or as a 1-page printable.

It contains questions about science-related activities and interests, how students like to work, how they prefer to receive help, and their overall feelings about science.

Using the results from this resource will help you get to know students, and the data will help you to purposefully create partnerships and teams as the year goes on!

#2 Science About Me

Students love getting to know each other and explaining more about themselves during the first few days of school. It’s usually a stretch to find non-academic time for this, but you can combine science and socialization with the Science About Me activity!

Students explore various science-related anecdotes, like their height in cm, their favorite use of electricity, their favorite animal, the moon phase from the day they were born, and more! Afterward, they can share with the class to introduce facts about themselves.

#3 Setting Up Your Science Notebook

Get your notebook routines off to a great start by reading the information found in the Setting Up Your Science Notebook resource!

This resource is designed to help teachers understand the purpose behind notebooking, explanations about best practices, and pro tips for organization and setup.

It also contains several printable options for cover pages, along with a sample notebook rubric, output ideas, big money words, and sentence stems.

There are several examples of output ideas and quality work examples. It’s a must-read for any new teachers, or anyone who wants to have a more solid understanding of how to better utilize science notebooks in the classroom.
