Do your students sometimes draw the tiniest little science diagrams?
Do they skip the labels?
Do some forget to describe their observations and measurements?
Ever had one color a turtle purple? (Let’s hope it’s not actually purple!)
Mine did too! So, I taught them the ABCD of Scientific Illustrations.
A is for accurate. Drawings should be realistic. Use science vocabulary.
B is for big. No teeny tiny drawings. Take up space!
C is for colorful. Use the actual colors you see.
D is for detailed. Include labels and measurements.
Along with modeling, visual rubrics, and checklists, this helped even the most reluctant science-artists make excellent observations in their notebooks.
I have a free resource for you! There are student bookmarks to attach in notebooks and materials for a bulletin board or poster.
