For after school tutoring, I meet with eight 5th graders once a week for 90 minutes. This program lasts 10 weeks and will hopefully prepare them for STAAR.
For Week 3 of tutoring, we focused on the behavior of light, mainly reflection and refraction.
The Standard: demonstrate that light travels in a straight line until it strikes an object or travels through one medium to another and demonstrate that light can be reflected such as the use of mirrors or other shiny surfaces and refracted such as the appearance of an object when observed through water
Starting Off: We begin each session by studying the objective and answering the key questions of the day. When we started the lesson, about half of the students had some ideas about each question, but still had some trouble and weren’t quite sure.
Activity: We determined whether objects reflect or refract light. I put 9 objects around the room with a sticky note label and they walked around and placed it in the correct category.
Test Prep: We practiced answering multiple choice questions about light. I was VERY pleased with how they did!
Closing: Students completed their After Lesson questions and wrote what they learned.
